Hello,

I've recently been participating in this Debate forum and have found that the toxicity level to be a little high for mature people operating and using BBS and terminal programs.

I've spoke privately with Digital Man and he said that this forum is not moderated in any way. But he did say something like feel free to debate and
to fine to include this message, and asking people to be more polite here.

I would think it would make DOVE-Net a more attractive network to use if we area little more civil here.

Perfect example: If somoene posts a thread called "Trump or Harris?" then thatcompletely opens up people preferring either candidate.

Can we not be children, maybe, please?

You will not catch me debating about politics or religion on DoveNet, Its hard enough anymore to even have an issue with the BBS software and try to get help, or to try to offer help to someone else without some foul mouthed chuckle-head getting on here wasting time and bandwitdth just so everyone knows their opinion on the subject of the minute..

Been this way for the 20+ years i've been around here.. The fringe hobbies like bbsing, ham radio, etc. tends to attract a fair more of these types of people per capita than other hobbies/venues.

You'll see who the main players are that do this.. it's only a few of them.. They've just about ran everyone else off so, you know.. theres that..

Nah man, these people you are debating with have been this way for many years, this is nothing new for this network (or any bbs network really) cant really make any kind of good BBS community because these same people frequent all these networks and run everyone off then laugh amongst themselves.. (more than likely getting off on it too)

Good luck trying to get a civil and, or intelligent converstion out of any of them. when they get backed in a hole their little fat sausage fingers cant type themselves out of (if their cheeto laiden keboard allowed) they'll just start cussing you or calling your dead relatives names, or calling you a crackhead or whatever same tired crap they've been doing for many years..

Nothing can really be done about it.. It's almost impossible to moderate a network like this.. they would definatly find a way in and make it even worse.. so DM just has to take the lessor of both evils.. let the little kids have their way.. sooner or later they'll be the only ones left.. they practically are.. hell you can see from time to time they start arguing with themselves.. Nothing better to do..

But this is the debate forum.. you kind of expect ANTYTHING in here right? seems thats the way it has been for as long as I remember.. thats why I try to stay out of here.. But when they start this crap on BBS help related messages, thats a bit different..

you cant go ANYWHERE on dovenet and be away from these guys, nor can you go on IRC anymore because they are there also trying their best to run any prospective users away. and they do it well..

Toxicity level in this place is quite low compared to the very bad places. The only thing "wrong" with DoveNET is that the administration does not do what RPGNet and other services do and police the place so only a way of thinking is allowed.

I can't speak for MRO, but my view is this:

I am fine if somebody shows up believing the moon is made of cheese and trying to argue why it is so. However, when that person finds his opinion is unpopular and runs to the administration in order to erradicate unbelievers, he is making clear he should be in a policed echo chamber in which only certain opinions are allowed.

I think suggesting such a person to go somewhere where cheese-moon theories are enforced is better for every party involved at that point.

How do I not belong here? I've been on this BBS for decades. I used Synchronet when it first came out and was still commercial software. I've owned and operated BBS's in the 80's, 90's, and 2000's. I've developed all ofthese opinions over time, never really forgetting what life was back in the
80's under Ronald Reagan. So just because the average person has no attentionspan and memory of what happend last decade let a lone the 80's, doesn't mean
I didn't evolve away from the Republican party. Go ahead. Time travel to 1987. Grab a couple Reagan supporters, and time travel them back to modern times. They'll think we've gone entirely INSANE.

I don't think it would be good to police a place where only one way of thinking is allowed, but sometimes I feel like there is a certain amount of toxicity on Dove-Net that sometimes makes me feel disinterested in reading the messages here. Particularly lately, there has been bickering between several members and I feel like it gets old after a while. Also, seeing negativity repeatedly from the same member (or members) for years can get a bit tiring too, though I've learned to not care so much and try to mostly ignore it when it happens.

There is no such thing as a "Debate" when everyone has the same opinion, and when asked to debate, no one accepts your argument as even valid. A debate requires hearing points of view that you don't like or want to hear. Get over it!

THIS forum ISN'T ONLY filled with people like you. Try reading and try using your brain. Other people are arguing with people like you also. Most just ignore you.

Especially in the 80's people didn't think like you. Yes, some of you did. I remember flame wars has ALWAYS been a problem. Back in the old days you actually had to deal with mixed points of view and tolerate it! BBS's used to be the most mainstream version of doing this stuff, not the Internet!

By replying back to you right now, telling you that you are wrong to debate in this fashion, is in fact debating. I'm giving you constructive critisism to hopefully get the remianing brain cell in your head to work.

Why don't you see if you can wake up another brain cell and try actually debating and consider other points of view in a debate? That's the whole POINT of a Debate! Did you graduate from high school? I remember Debate class, do you?

A lot of you, myself included, are skilled computer programmers. In coding you have to think of all the variables, functions, etc. Guess what, real life is no different! Politics isn't just some weird thing that requires no brain cells! You have to THINK, consider peoples arguments, and change your opinion when you're WRONG. Too many Americans can't do that anymore today, and it's really sad that has travelled into the BBS community.

Dealing with flame wars back the in the day was easy. Don't let people do it on your BBS!

So anyone reading this, if you YOU don't want to consider that the United States Constitution itself was written by both liberals and conservatives, then you're seriously confused. The founding members where of a mixed cultures and beliefs. They had to do it this way. The constition DOES NOT IN ANY WAY tolerate some President to become a dictator, like Donald Trump says himself that he wants. It's not true.

I saw the same video and here in OH, during the 270 Parade, we had some Biden supporters asking us why we liked Trump so much that we invited them to an after parade party and we gad an awesome discussion of both sides. They told us that we were the most coolest and imformed people they ever met. Now if they voted for Trump that year who know, but at least we were the civil of the two factions.

debate in this fashion, is in fact debating. I'm giving you constructive critisism to hopefully get the remianing brain cell in your head to work.

So, in the exact same fasion as your above paragraph, *my* original reply to you was telling you that you opened the can of worms, and that crying to Digital Man because people weren't agreeing with you was completely out of line and uncalled for.

Now if you were being more specific and calling out the people that were actually insulting you directly because of your original post, you should have been more specific (both to Digital Man, and the rest of us). However, *I* didn't insult you for what you said, I pointed out that you started all of this. So you either replied to the wrong person, or have some short term memory loss.

Why don't you see if you can wake up another brain cell and try actually debating and consider other points of view in a debate? That's the
whole POINT of a Debate! Did you graduate from high school? I
remember Debate class, do you?

I will also mention that some of the sites I know who do heavy policing have managed to corner themselves into irrelevance because it is night impossible to use the site for its intended purpose. In some extreme cases linking to threads in "unaproved" forums will get you kicked. "That thread you linked too is at a forum run by a Nazi, so you are a Nazi too. Die by the anti-Nazi hammer!"

I don't think it would be good to police a place where only one way of thinking is allowed, but sometimes I feel like there is a certain amount of toxicity on Dove-Net that sometimes makes me feel disinterested in reading the messages here. Particularly lately, there has been bickering between several members and I feel like it gets old after a while. Also, seeing negativity repeatedly from the same member (or members) for years can get a bit tiring too, though I've learned to not care so much and try to mostly ignore it when it happens.

Well, in the Usenet you just filtered out people who drained your energy out or who had nothing to contribute. Here you just blaze past their messages :-)

Watching two people argue like teenagers in a qualm that has nothing to do with you is a bit of a waste of time, but I think it s not worse than finding threads you are not interested about in some echo you visit every now and then.

Yikes. That's why I don't and never really bothered with web forums and other related sites.

There's still some FTN networks around that do it that way as well. It's easy enough to just not carry those.

I have even more cringeworthy tales to tell. I remember an IRC channel in some Spanish network that was a Troll channel. Many operators of other regular channels would kick you out from their places if they learnt you were logged to the troll channel.

To be honest, the troll channel was so bad you would think it was hiding under a bridge in order to pounce on unsuspecting travelers, but ban-on-sight was very wtf in my book.

I think every election year, someone says something like this sounding altruistic.

In 2020, that's all we heard and look where that got us. Where we are today in this blisteringly insane economy, grocery prices thru the roof and well, I think we just need to get back to the basics and just let the "Hate" flow. It will be good for the economy.

If you have a thin skin, it's probably best to stay out of shark infested waters. I can generally hold my own when it comes to debating insane, radical communist and flat earthers so I don't spend too much time telling my opposition to "Stop hating" and "To be civil". We've tried to be civil, and being civil just isn't working. We are dealing with Low IQ voters that cry a lot when you hurt their feelings. (THe words hurt crowd). I am in the sticks and stones crowd. There is nothing you can say to me that will make me tell you to be civil and stop hating.

Pretty much the best defense against a broken economy is looking for ways to participate less in it.

If you produce your own eggs then you don't give a flying fuck if egg distribution goes wonkers. I have been saying it for years already: the best use for surplus monmey these days is seeking self sufficency.
